This Classic SoHo Loft Is Basically a Book Lover's Dream

Hannah Cheng,В one of theВ talented women behind those insanely addictive morsels atВ Mimi Cheng's Dumplings in New York City, has transformed her SoHo loft into a space that would make any book lover swoon. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light, making it the ideal environment for curling up with a great read.

When designing the loft with her husband, Kenny Osier, a passionate music producer, the restaurateur told MyDomaine they "wanted it to feel like an airy but warm and inviting sanctuary." Cheng, who describes her style as California chic, favored an aesthetic of clean white lines but embraced the loft's exposed brick walls and infused the space with pops of color. To drive home their warm and inviting vision, the couple worked withВ Homepolish and interior designerВ Ariel FarmerВ to make the place theirВ own. Filled with books, one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork, and music, of course, their home is the epitome of a personalized space, feeling at once curated and lived in.

Complete with a cozy reading nook, Cheng's classic SoHo loft, we think you'll agree, was practically designed for book lovers-keep scrolling to step inside.

The 1500-square-foot SoHo loft was built in 1915 with high ceilings, exposed brick walls, and hand-blown glass windows. In the spirit of creating an inviting space, Cheng wanted to curate a living room that was both comfortable and conducive to conversation. "Over the years, I kept saving the same pictures of two couches facing each other in the living room," said Cheng. "It makes a great entertaining space."

In addition to being a space for hosting guests, the living room, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows, is the ideal spot for curling up with a good read. "We wanted a cozy reading nook," explained Cheng.

When it came to choosing a color scheme for their home, Cheng favored clean white lines and pops of color. "I love clean palettes, or as Kenny says, anything white or light gray," she told MyDomaine. "It's easy to switch up your vibe if you have a neutral base. For example, I love white furniture with bright pillows and throws."

Being married to a passionate producer, Cheng knew their home would be filled with music. "We have a Sonos speaker in every room, including the bathroom," she said. "We love showering while listening to music-feels like a small life luxury."

As a restaurateur, Cheng decided to bring her love for cooking outside the kitchen and into the living room. "Our coffee table displays our favorite cookbooks," including chef Missy Robbins's first cookbook, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner… Life: Recipes and Adventures From My Home Kitchen, she told MyDomaine.

The couple also personalized the space with artwork. "We got two Dan Miller paintings from Creative Growth that really add color and dimension to our living room," said Cheng. "His work is amazing, and we are happy to be able to support an organization like Creative Growth, a free art center for artists with different types of disabilities."

Textiles infuse the living room with color and personality as well. "I also lugged home a gorgeous throw from Lisbon that's oversize for my 6'4" husband, and very cozy. We call it the lead blanket," said Cheng. "It was really a commitment to bring it back because I only do carry-on when traveling."

The loft is filled with special items that aren't purely decorative. "Our mantra when it came to purchasing things was that it had to feel special to us and that we had to use it every day," explained Cheng. "We don't save certain pieces for special occasions because every day is a special occasion!"

Given that the living room is optimized for entertaining, Cheng's dining room is just as welcoming a space (as you might expect of a renownedВ restaurateur's home). "We love our dining table that fits up to 12 people because it allows us to throw dinner parties all the time," she told MyDomaine.

Cheng's favorite thing about the space, hands down, is the natural light. "Our living room windows go up to the ceiling, and the top half is hand-blown glass," said Cheng. "The serenity and light incentivize me to get up out of bed every morning because I love soaking in all the peacefulness over a cup of coffee or matcha."
